In June of 2000 I went in for what I thought was a routine mammogram. My mammogram came back abnormal and after a needle biopsy I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The news came as a shock as our family had no history of the disease.
After two surgeries I started radiation treatment. I looked forward to beginning treatment that would kill the cancer cells in my body. However, I was not prepared for the extreme fatigue. I had to let go of the need to always have my home clean and in order. Mornings were easier for me, but by evening I found I could not take care of my family’s needs.
On top of the fatigue, the thought of wearing a bra was unbearable. I found a sports bra that provided the comfort and support I needed. The radiation therapy caused my fair skin to burn and itch. It removed the pigmentation from my nipple and left my breast swollen, red and inflamed for months after the treatment. I knew the radiation therapy would be unpleasant yet I was unsure how long the inflammation, burning and fatigue would last. What I found was that the burning eventually turned into a tan, the inflammation subsided, and the fatigue was the last to go.
During and after radiation therapy, I began to investigate other alternative techniques to complement my cancer treatment. These techniques affected my healing process so profoundly that I felt compelled to share them with others so they could benefit as I had. During this time I was also looking for ways to support my body by removing the residual toxins from radiation. This is how Aurana Wellness came to be.
As a certified clinical Hypnotherapist, I now help clients who are suffering from the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. I have incorporated guided imagery and Reiki, modalities I find beneficial in releasing fear as well as balancing and strengthening the immune system. As a cancer survivor and a healer I want to provide a safe, supportive and nurturing environment that will facilitate healing on all levels … spiritual, emotional, mental and physical.
